5 Limiting Beliefs of Artists and How to Overcome Them
For a long time, limiting beliefs held me back from making and creating art in the way that I wanted. I did not solely want to make art based on academic or professional obligations and, yet, I still had fears, self-doubt, and anxiety about making art on my own. As I slowly worked on myself and continued on my self-development journey, I was able to overcome my limiting beliefs as an artist. This is not to say you will not remain doubtful or anxious about your work. I am saying, however, that you will be able to do it, even with those feelings.
What are Limiting Beliefs?
Limiting beliefs often exist in our minds, deeply impacting our artistic growth and creative potential. Sometimes, we are not even aware that we have limiting beliefs and we believe they are random thoughts that circle in our heads. Yet, negative self-perception on a constant basis can have a profound impact to our growth.
Limiting beliefs are deeply ingrained thoughts and convictions that individuals hold about themselves, others, or the world around them. These beliefs act as self-imposed barriers that restrict personal growth, hinder progress, and prevent individuals from reaching their full potential. They are often rooted in fear, self-doubt, past experiences, societal conditioning, or negative self-perception.
It is important to note that limiting beliefs are not based on objective reality but rather subjective interpretations and assumptions. They are often deeply ingrained and automatic, operating at a subconscious level. However, identifying and challenging these beliefs is crucial for personal growth and breaking free from self-imposed limitations.
Common Limiting Beliefs Among Artists
Common limiting beliefs among artists include fear of failure, feeling inadequate when comparing to others, lack of confidence, and that success is unattainable for them. Specific examples include:
“There are already enough artists out there, nobody will care or buy my work.”
“I am not talented or smart enough to be a creative expert.”
“I don’t think my art work can sustain me financially.”
“Friends and family will laugh at me if I start becoming an artist full-time.”
“I am afraid people will not like me if I don’t consistently show up or share content they would like.”
Mindset Changes to Overcome Limiting Beliefs
There are a couple of mindset shifts needed in order to overcome limiting beliefs.
A core part is to cultivate a positive mindset and self-talk. Replace negative self-talk with affirmations and positive statements that reinforce your capabilities.
Understand that failure is not a setback but a stepping stone to growth and improvement. Embrace experimentation, learn from mistakes, and see failures as valuable learning opportunities.
Embrace imperfection and let go of the need for everything to be perfect. Focus on the joy of creation and the process rather than the end result. Embrace the freedom that comes with allowing yourself to make mistakes.
Remember that each artist's journey is unique. Instead of comparing yourself to others, draw inspiration from their work and use it to fuel your own creative fire. Embrace your individuality and the distinctive voice that only you possess.

Strategies to Overcome Limiting Beliefs
This section shares a step by step exercise you can do to help you overcome your limiting beliefs.
Step 1: List your limiting beliefs as specific as possible.
The first step in overcoming limiting beliefs is to identify and acknowledge they exist. Really thinking deeply about your thoughts and beliefs and list them. Be as specific as you can.
Step 2: Question each of your limiting beliefs.
Ask yourself if there is concrete evidence to support these beliefs or if they are based on assumptions or past experiences. By challenging their accuracy, you can begin to dismantle their power over you. For each of your limiting beliefs, list why it is not true.
Step 3: Seek evidence to disprove beliefs.
For each of your limiting beliefs, actively seek evidence that contradicts it. Look for examples of people who have overcome similar challenges or achieved success in areas where you feel limited. This process of gathering contrary evidence can help shift your perspective and weaken the grip of limiting beliefs on your mindset.
Step 4: Reframe and replace limiting beliefs.
Instead of viewing limiting beliefs as absolute truths, reframe them into more empowering statements. Replace negative, self-sabotaging thoughts with positive, affirming ones. For example, if you believe you are not talented enough, reframe it as "I have unique creative abilities that I continue to develop through practice and dedication." By reframing beliefs, you open yourself up to new possibilities and build self-confidence.
Step 5: Challenge negative self-talk.
Pay attention to your inner dialogue and consciously challenge negative self-talk. When you catch yourself engaging in self-criticism or self-doubt, consciously replace those thoughts with positive and encouraging statements. Practice self-compassion and treat yourself with kindness and understanding. Remind yourself that it's okay to make mistakes and that growth comes from embracing challenges.

Many artists are genuine, kind, and extremely supporting of one another’s growth. In my own creative journey, I have befriended many artists on both an international and local level on Instagram, as well as, joined a local sketching group that meets once a month. Despite all of us having different personalities, backgrounds, and art styles, all have been kind to me and we get along great. We all are rooting for each other’s growth, because if one succeeds, it carves a path for another.
Step 7: Embrace growth and learning.
Cultivate a mindset of continuous growth and learning. Approach challenges as opportunities for personal and professional development. Embrace new experiences, take calculated risks, and step outside your comfort zone. By viewing setbacks as learning opportunities rather than failures, you can reframe your perspective and use them as stepping stones towards success.
Nurturing Your Creativity and Growth
A last piece of advice is to continue to nurture your creativity and growth. Dedicate time to regular practice and experimentation. Allow yourself to explore different mediums, techniques, and styles. Step outside your comfort zone and take creative risks. Embrace the unknown, as it is often where breakthroughs and new discoveries are found. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and share your authentic self through your art.
Find inspiration in various sources, such as nature, music, literature, and other art forms. Embrace diverse perspectives and let them enrich your creative process. Engage in activities that nourish your soul and ignite your imagination.
